  Laggan Appraisal Well
TOTAL E&P UK is planning to drill an appraisal well in the Laggan gas prospect in Block 206/1a located to the West of Shetland. The proposed well location is in 592m of water on the east slope of the Faroe-Shetland Channel, approximately 30km to the northwest of the BP Clair field, 80km from the Shetland Islands and 60km from the UK-Faroes median line.

The aim of the appraisal well is to further investigate two specific geological targets and establish the specific composition of the gas, before a final decision is made whether and how to proceed with the Laggan development.

Drilling operations are expected to commence in spring 2004 and continue for approximately 4 months. Depending on the availability of suitable drilling rigs, the well will be drilled from either an anchored semi-submersible drilling rig or a dynamically positioned drill ship. The well will be drilled using water based drilling fluids, with discharge of cleaned drill cuttings to sea. To ascertain more information on the characteristics of the gas present, a short well test will be performed, during which gas will be flared. Following completion of the drilling activities the well will be either suspended or abandoned in line with industry guidance.

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been undertaken and an Environmental Statement (ES) prepared for the well in accordance with the requirements of the Offshore Petroleum Production and Pipelines (Assessment of Environmental Effects) Regulations 1999. This purpose of this process is to:
• integrate environmental considerations into the project planning and design activities;
• achieve a high standard of environmental performance for the project;
• consult with stakeholders and address their concerns;
• and demonstrate that the project is being implemented in the correct manner.
