Our upstream sites are all accredited to the international Environmental Management System standard ISO14001, which recognises a genuine commitment to sustainable development. Our St Fergus site also holds the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) registration.
Our Environmental Management System (EMS) is an integral part of our overall company management system, which includes organisational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining our environmental policy. It has 5 key components:
Policy – a commitment to legal compliance and improving environmental performance
Planning – identifying the significant environmental aspects for our organisation, setting environmental objectives and targets and producing programmes to achieve them
Implementation and Operation – systems and procedures followed to ensure we conform with policy and objectives, covering environmental responsibilities, training, awareness, communication, document control, operational control and emergency response preparedness
Checking and Corrective Action – monitoring and measuring our environmental performance and EMAS effectiveness
Management Review – regularly reviewing the overall system and making any necessary changes to improve performance
We have a professional responsibility to be environmentally aware but we also believe that everyone in our business needs to have a personal responsibility too. So we’ve created a system of Environmental Focus Teams (EFTs) for each site, which look at ways in which we can all play our part in being environmentally positive.
The onshore EFT looks at ways in which we can reduce the waste we generate and improve our energy efficiency. We set ourselves targets and areas for continuous improvement in every area of our operation and work with our people – through training sessions and focus groups – to keep them informed and focused on the wider benefits of our EMS. We also hold an annual Environment Week each year to help raise environmental awareness and remind everyone of our responsibilities.
