Listening to the birds...but underwater

An electronic 'underwater ear' will form part of a project to monitor the numbers and submarine behaviour of diving seabirds around Orkney.  From the point of view of the bird populations, this study will help optimise the location and minimise the impact of experimental tidal energy turbines.

This is one of a pair of Total-sponsored projects, one involving conservation and the other focusing on the natural resources of renewable energy.  Both will be undertaken by Heriot-Watt University's International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT).
